Low Back Pain
Specialist

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. It can affect one’s daily functioning, ability to work, and overall quality of life. Dr. Koppel has over 20 years of experience in treating patients with low back pain. He performs a comprehensive examination, and develops an individual treatment plan to utilize conservative and minimally invasive therapies to alleviate the cause of the pain.

How is the cause of the pain diagnosed?

Many, but not all, of the conditions can be diagnosed with a good physical examination and MRI studies. However, pain specialists know that MRIs only tell part of the story, and can be misleading. Dr. Koppel has devised a strategy to use directed nerve blocks to diagnose the pain generator, the structure causing the pain. Once determined, a treatment plan can be devised to alleviate the pain.

What causes low back pain?

The most common cause of low back pain is due to lumbar muscle sprains or strains, but other causes include lumbar disc herniations, disc degeneration, and spinal stenosis.

What treatments exist to alleviate the pain?

Lumbar epidural steroid injections
This procedure involves placing medication in the spinal canal, whereby it can bath multiple levels simultaneously, reaching both discs and nerves.

Lumbar transforaminal epidural injection;
Also known as a selective nerve root block, medication is injected to target one or two specific nerves to reduce leg pain

Lumbar facet block
Vertebrogenic pain is usually due to the facet joints, which aid the spine in mobility. Directed nerve blocks will diagnose and treat facet joint syndrome.

Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency uses heat and energy to disrupt pain signals from going to the brain. This is a common and effective treatment for chronic low back pain.

Mimimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression MILD Procedure
This procedure treats spinal stenosis without major back surgery. A device is placed within the spine to remove a small amount of tissue and bone to alleviate the condition.

Percutaneous Disc Decompression
If the cause of the low back pain is determined to be due to a disk herniation various minimally invasive treatments exist to alleviate the pain.
