Arm & Leg Pain Treatment in New Jersey
Pain in your arms or legs can make everyday activities difficult. Walking, standing, lifting, driving, or even sitting comfortably may become challenging when pain, numbness, or weakness affects an extremity.
Sometimes, the source of pain is obvious, such as an injury to a joint or tendon. Other times, the problem originates elsewhere in the body.
A pinched nerve in the neck can cause pain that travels into the arm, while a lumbar spine condition can produce pain that radiates into the leg. Circulation problems and other medical conditions may also cause extremity symptoms.
For nearly 30 years, Dr. Todd Koppel has helped patients throughout New Jersey manage spine-related, nerve-related, and musculoskeletal pain.
Rather than treating every case of arm or leg pain the same way, he focuses on identifying the underlying cause and developing a treatment plan based on your diagnosis.
Common Symptoms of Arm and Leg Pain
Symptoms vary depending on whether the pain originates from a nerve, joint, muscle, tendon, or blood vessel.
Common symptoms may include:
- Persistent aching or sharp pain
- Pain that travels from the neck into the arm
- Pain that radiates from the lower back into the leg
- Burning or shooting sensations
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Pain when walking, standing, or lifting
- Joint stiffness or swelling
- Tenderness around an injured tendon or muscle
- Leg heaviness or swelling associated with certain venous conditions
The pattern of your symptoms can help determine which structures need further evaluation.
What Is Causing Your Arm or Leg Pain?
Arm and leg pain can develop for many reasons. Identifying the source is essential because treatment for a compressed nerve differs from treatment for a joint injury or circulation problem.
Cervical Radiculopathy
A compressed or irritated nerve in the cervical spine can cause pain that travels from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand.
Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, or weakness.
Potential causes include cervical herniated discs, arthritis, and spinal narrowing.
Lumbar Radiculopathy and Sciatica
When a nerve in the lower back becomes irritated or compressed, pain may radiate into the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot.
This is commonly associated with sciatica.
Symptoms may include shooting pain, burning, tingling, or weakness.

Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis occurs when spaces within the spine narrow and place pressure on nerves or the spinal cord.
Lumbar spinal stenosis can cause leg pain, numbness, or heaviness that becomes worse during walking or standing and improves with sitting or bending forward.
Cervical spinal stenosis may cause arm symptoms and, when the spinal cord is affected, problems with balance or hand coordination.
Joint-Related Pain
Arthritis and other joint conditions can cause pain that extends into nearby areas of an arm or leg.
For example, shoulder conditions may cause upper-arm pain, while hip or knee problems may affect movement throughout the leg.

Tendon and Soft-Tissue Injuries
Injuries involving muscles, tendons, or other soft tissues can produce localized pain, tenderness, and weakness.
Symptoms often worsen when the affected tissue is used.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include rehabilitation, injections, or other targeted procedures.
Venous Disease
Certain vein conditions can cause leg discomfort, swelling, aching, or heaviness.
These symptoms may become more noticeable after prolonged standing.
Because venous disease requires a different treatment approach from nerve or joint pain, identifying the cause is important.
Sudden leg swelling or pain may indicate a more urgent vascular problem and should not be assumed to be routine venous disease.
How We Diagnose Arm and Leg Pain
The first step is determining where your symptoms originate.
During your visit, Dr. Koppel reviews your medical history, symptom pattern, previous injuries, and treatment history.
Your evaluation may include:
- Physical examination of the affected limb
- Assessment of the cervical or lumbar spine
- Strength and reflex testing
- Evaluation of sensation and nerve function
- Joint and soft-tissue examination
- Review of MRI, X-rays, or other imaging when appropriate
- Additional nerve or vascular testing when indicated
If your symptoms suggest a condition outside the scope of pain management, additional evaluation or referral may be appropriate.
When Should You See a Pain Specialist?
Consider scheduling an evaluation if:
- Arm or leg pain persists for several weeks
- Pain radiates from your neck or lower back
- You experience recurring numbness or tingling
- Symptoms interfere with walking, lifting, or everyday activities
- Joint or tendon pain hasn’t improved with conservative care
- Previous treatment hasn’t provided adequate relief
Seek urgent medical attention for sudden or progressive weakness, new bowel or bladder dysfunction, or numbness around the groin.
Sudden arm or leg weakness, particularly with facial drooping or speech changes, may indicate a stroke and requires emergency care. A suddenly cold, pale, or severely painful limb also requires emergency evaluation.
Arm and Leg Pain Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the source of your symptoms.
Dr. Koppel may recommend different approaches for nerve-related pain, joint conditions, soft-tissue injuries, or venous disease.
Cervical Injection Therapy
When arm pain originates from an appropriate cervical spine condition, cervical injection therapy may be considered.
The type and location of the injection depends on the diagnosis.
Lumbar Injections
For selected causes of lower back and radiating leg pain, lumbar injections may help address inflammation or pain associated with affected spinal structures.
The appropriate procedure depends on whether symptoms originate from a nerve root, facet joint, or another source.
Epidural Steroid Injections
Epidural steroid injections may be considered for certain cases of nerve-related arm or leg pain.
These injections deliver medication into the epidural space to help reduce inflammation around irritated spinal nerves.
They may provide temporary symptom relief but do not mechanically remove a herniated disc or reverse spinal narrowing.
Joint Injections and PRP Therapy
When arm or leg pain originates from a joint, tendon, or other musculoskeletal structure, treatment may involve targeted joint injections or PRP therapy.
The choice depends on the diagnosis and available evidence for the particular condition.
Vein Treatment
When leg symptoms are caused by venous disease, treatment may involve evaluation of the affected veins and a procedure appropriate to the vascular diagnosis.
Vein treatment is not appropriate for leg pain caused by spinal nerve compression or unrelated musculoskeletal conditions.
